Fuel Filter location??

I'm in the process of installing a new intake and carb along with some new 3/8 inch fuel line. I want to relocate the fuel filter to the gas tank area mounted just in front of the tank.

Any thoughts as to reasons this would not be a good idea?

I've got one of the Fram canister type filters right before my electric pump on my 73.

I've not had any problems with getting the pump primed to work although I have heard others that have had this problem. Who knows why though. Maybe it's how good the pump suction is.

putting a filter back at the tank will be fine, but put one at the carb to. usually about 40 micron before the pump and a little finer after. its cheap insurance and then you wont have to wonder about your pump, thats new now but wont be forever. thats to nice of a car to let anything bad happen to it;)

Just an FYI. You always want a fuel filter between a mechanical fuel pump and a carburetor. The arm on a mechanical fuel pumps actuates a diaphragm. One or more checkvalves will allow fuel to enter and exit the fuel pump chamber through the lines. As long as there is plenty of fuel in the line(and the pump), only the center portion of the diaphragm will flex. This allows residue to form on the outer edges. Should air ever get picked up from the tank (or if you run out of fuel) the entire area of the diaphragm can flex. This condition can break any residue loose. Without an filter, it's a straight shot to the needle and seat in the carb.

For those thinking this strange, it's not a fabrication. I learned that one from an instructor at a carburetor class presented by Tomco.
